Ties Prakken specialises in criminal law and human rights. She's also worked for the Willem Pompe Institute for Criminal Law and Criminology in Utrecht, where she obtained her doctorate in 1985. Between 1998 and 2004, she was professor of Criminal Procedural Law at Maastricht University. Ties is a member of the Dutch Association of Criminal Defence Lawyers.

Ties Prakken publiceert regelmatig over strafrechtelijke onderwerpen. In 2010 verscheen het boek 'Politieke verdediging, een analyse van historische en actuele politieke strafzaken en de strategie van de verdediging' met de Brusselse advocaat Jan Fermon, en in 2013 'Grondrechten op de helling, de rol van het Wildersproces in de afbraak van de rechtsstaat'.
