Last Saturday 19 June, investigative journalists of radio show Argos presented their latest findings in the investigation into the murder of Mola Nissi. Nissi was murdered in front of his house in The Hague in November 2017 by assassins who have remained unknown. Soon after the murder, the suspicion arose that Iran was responsible for the attack. This suspicion was confirmed when the Netherlands announced that it had pressed for sanctions imposed by the European Union on Iran in January 2009. The police investigation into the murder is still pending.
From investigations by Argos it has now become clear that an Iranian asylum seekers had already warned the Dutch Intelligence Unit AIVD and the Dutch Immigration Service IND before the assassination about a secret murder plan by Iran. The man claimed that he had been sent to the Netherlands by Iran on a mission to assassinate Nissi.
On behalf of Nissi's family, lawyer Barbara van Straaten sent a letter of liability to the Dutch State last year. The family states that the Dutch State has failed to take sufficient measures to protect Nissi's safety. Nissi was under threat for years and his family states that the Dutch State was aware of the secere risks for Nissi's safery and should have done more to prevent an attack. Minister Ollongren has rejected liability of the Dutch State. The family is considering further steps.
